Crafting High-Impact Research Proposals for ICSSR Funding

From Research Ideas to Fundable Proposals

As research funding becomes increasingly competitive, the ability to transform a promising research idea into a well-structured and impactful proposal has become an essential academic skill. Recognizing this need, the Center for Research at Sona School of Business and Management, Sona College of Technology, Salem, organized a One-Day Faculty Development Programme on “Crafting High-Impact Research Proposals for ICSSR Funding” on 11 June 2026.

The programme brought together faculty members and research scholars with a shared objective—to better understand the expectations of funding agencies and strengthen their capability to develop research proposals that are academically rigorous, socially relevant, and funding-ready.

Insights from the Funding Perspective

The session was led by Dr. Jacob Kalle, Consultant (Academic & Administration) and Office Superintendent (i/c), ICSSR Southern Regional Centre, Hyderabad. Drawing upon his extensive experience in research administration and proposal evaluation, he provided participants with practical insights into what distinguishes successful proposals from those that fail to secure funding.

The discussions moved beyond proposal formats and documentation to address the broader question of how researchers can position their work to create meaningful academic and societal impact.

Building Stronger Research Proposals

Participants were introduced to the critical elements of proposal development, including the formulation of research problems, identification of research gaps, framing of objectives and research questions, methodology selection, and alignment of research outcomes with funding priorities.

Special emphasis was placed on the importance of clarity, originality, methodological rigor, and policy relevance—factors that increasingly influence funding decisions across research agencies.

The session also provided valuable guidance on proposal structuring, budget preparation, documentation requirements, and common mistakes that often reduce the competitiveness of research applications.

Exploring ICSSR Funding Opportunities

A key highlight of the programme was the detailed overview of funding schemes and academic support initiatives offered by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).

Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of opportunities related to research projects, fellowships, international collaborations, seminars, capacity-building programmes, publications, and short-term research grants. The session also clarified eligibility requirements, application procedures, evaluation criteria, and expectations from prospective applicants.

Advancing a Culture of Research Excellence

The programme served as an important platform for strengthening research capability among faculty members and scholars while encouraging greater participation in externally funded research initiatives.
