Applying Operations Research in Tourism Systems
At Sona School of Business and Management, learning extends beyond conceptual understanding into the design of real-world decision systems.
On 26 March 2026, students explored the application of Operations Research (OR) in the tourism and hospitality industry through an industry-led session by Mr. Pavithran (Batch of 2023), Associate Travel Consultant at Dimaak Tours.
The session highlighted how analytical models and structured decision-making frameworks are applied to improve operational efficiency, pricing strategies, and service optimization in modern tourism businesses.
From Complexity to Clarity in Decision-Making
Tourism systems, often perceived as seamless customer experiences, are supported by layered operational and strategic decisions. Students explored how Operations Research functions as a decision engine within areas such as:
- A. Demand forecasting and dynamic pricing
- B. Route optimization and itinerary structuring
- C. Resource allocation under operational constraints
- D. Cost control and risk minimization
Through practical industry examples, learners examined how organizations transition from reactive choices to optimized, data-driven decisions.
Translating Theory into Industry Logic
The session enabled students to move beyond theoretical models and understand how analytical thinking supports real operational environments.
- A. Structured Thinking through breaking down complex business scenarios into analytical models
- B. Decision Intelligence by evaluating trade-offs between cost, time, and service quality
- C. Industry Application by connecting mathematical frameworks with tourism operations
- D. Analytical Confidence through evidence-based strategic decision-making
Learning Outcome
Students developed the ability to view business environments as interconnected systems requiring precision, optimization, and strategic clarity.
The session reinforced an important managerial capability — the ability to design decisions, not just make them.
Industry Integration in Action
Such engagements reflect the approach at Sona School of Business and Management, where alumni expertise is integrated into the learning ecosystem to create context-rich and application-driven education.
Mr. Pavithran’s journey from campus learning to industry practice offered students valuable insight into how academic frameworks evolve into measurable business impact.
